Town Approval

Zoning, permits, and licenses

Get your town to say yes before you sign a lease.

  1. 1

    Check zoning first

Look up the parcel's zoning district and confirm your use is permitted, conditional, or needs a variance.

  2. 2

    Meet the planning department

Request a pre-application meeting. Ask what they'll need and what concerns usually come up.

  3. 3

    List every permit

Business license, building/renovation permits, sign permits, occupancy certificate, health, fire, and state licenses.

  4. 4

    Prepare for hearings

Bring site plans, parking and traffic info, hours, noise and waste plans.

  5. 5

    Engage neighbors early

Letters of support from neighbors and local groups carry real weight.
